9 reasons Doing new things is helping you evolve

This website is built to encourage doing new things and thinking different. For those who love challenges to thrive, it is clear as a bell. But for those who are so introverted, those who very much enjoy their comfort zone and those who are stuck with procrastination, doing new things is still difficult which requires energy, time, and priority (of course).

If you are one of the latter, you may want to read on to see some cool benefits of doing new, so that you will save your energy and time to put it in your priority list. And if you can make it even better, you will have the need to develop this “Doing new things” mindset, gain its momentum and build it as a habit.

1. Doing new things is A trait of successful people

Successful people might swear when they are talking to one type of person, meanwhile are sophisticated and classy when talking to another type. They might treat one of their employees in a semi-harsh way and treat another in a friendly and relaxed manner. These different situations have nothing to do with chance or coincidence. Highly successful people are fully aware of what they are communicating to the outside world, and they know so because they have a lot of different perspectives through which they can view things.

2. Overcoming fear and stagnation

Have you ever recalled your frequent anxiety or fear toward something? Public speaking? An important examination? A spider or a rat? Doing new little things is a great solution to train ourselves for fear, because it is the time for us to get control and not play victim. Sooner or later, we will be able to respond to difficult circumstances that we have to endure with greater ease. Plus, this method can get you motivated to remove the barriers progressively and overcome the stagnation as well. Gradually, when you get used to little challenges, you will realize that fear has stopped and stagnation has dropped. And then, when facing something that is about to happen, you have already collected enough stamina, and you pop up like a monarch butterfly emerging from chrysalis.

Let me tell you about someone I met at Taipei airport just on our Lunar new year trip this Feb. You may guess, an old friend, a colleague, a family member?

Nope. A rabbit.

I know, some may say it is too weird or devil, some are terrifying or annoying seeing this, and some freak out. It is not an easy statue, but I love it.

Nhyh-Jen Ni Ni, the artist of this piece of art, uses waste paper as the material of her sculptures, and reshapes it into rabbit-themed creations. Her works are reflections of all of us, who believe they can bravely break through the challenges and frustrations. The name of this statue is “Glamorous steps toward light”.

A narrative of this piece is:

“What’s the biggest fear in life?

Perhaps, it’s not the flaws we tried to improve nor the uncertainty in the dark. It’s the fear of meeting the brighter and stronger self that is beyond our imagination.

Often, we draw a line that prevents us from trying.

Often, we are accustomed to the comfort zone we are at.

However, who is the one set the trap for you and me?

Perhaps, being imperfect is not our biggest fear, it’s the ignorance where we know nothing about our own value.

How to retain ourselves with love the unbound way

From people perspective, everything, every action, every motion, every thought, every feeling, all of life is an attempt to experience love. And when I mention “love” it is not just about Eros (the romantic love) but also:

  • Philia (deep friendship),
  • Ludus (playful love, which involves playful activities),
  • Agape (selfless love, including but not limited to love for humankind, for nature, for God),
  • Pragma (longstanding love, which involves duty and long term interests),
  • Philautia (self love, which can be healthy or unhealthy, we will discuss the healthy Philautia below), and
  • Storge (familial love) 

But how can we retain ourselves with love, incorporate this perspective into our daily lives and how do we therefore reduce our “negative” emotions such as hate, resentment, and anger? Is there an easy way of looking at ourselves and our emotions so that we can sustain the perspective that hate and love are just two sides of the same coin?

Is art a talent or a skill?

Each individual has certain skills and talent that makes us different from one another. We frequently utilize the terms talent and and skill reciprocally, without knowing the way that these are not quite the same as each other. Talent is an inborn ability or regular inclination of an individual which is frequently hidden and needs acknowledgment, that is to say, being good in a specific activity, without actually learning or acquiring it. In contrast to skill, which is a learned ability, and it tends to be developed in somebody in the event that he/she put his time and endeavors in it. The endeavors should be intentional, methodical and supported to procure a skill and satisfactorily undertake different assignments and activities. Meaning of Talent

It very well may be enhanced after some time if efforts are made the right way. Talent is innate, just a few people have really got it. All of us are brought into the world with a unique quality; that is talent. Not just in the field of study, an individual may have talent in singing, joking, cooking, acting, playing football, crafting and painting, and so on. If you set a child free and alone, he will take part in the action, he prefers most, or he is best in. It regularly occurs with numerous individuals that their talent stays plain as a result of the absence of legitimate direction, support and opportunity to showcase it.

Meaning of Skill

Skill alludes to ability or expertise in playing out a task, gotten by an individual through deliberate learning, practice or experience. It is the result of ceaseless endeavors and improvements made to gain proficiency.

Skill enables you to play out a task effectively. As there are no criteria for gaining skills, it tends to be rehearsed by any individual, yet it requires loads of diligent work, time and different assets of the individual to develop it.

Skill is the “nurture” angle which is the inverse of talent being the “nature” capacity. However, a skill can also be an outcome or an augmentation of an individual’s specific talent and extensive exertion. This implies a talent can be a venturing stone to improve a skill, and therefore a skill can be a refined capacity when combined with talent.

Skill can be general or explicit. General skills allude to the skills which are ordinarily obtained by the general population like leadership skills, teamwork, etc. Then again, specific skills are those which are identified with performing a particular task or job. Consistent improvement of any activity or art gives preference for any person.

Why I wrote “100 new little things”

Why I wrote “100 new little things”

The book is my own experience, and the experience at the beginning is not as clear as written in the book, but it is in fact a long journey from many years ago of an introverted and lazy person, trying to get out of the box that life locked her in.

My beginning was like many people who tried something new to overcome stress and boredom. Then I got swept up in the whirlwind of works, schools and responsibilities, felt nothing that I really loved and the limits that introverts always encounter. And then I told myself: why couldn’t I both keep my nature (introverted) and radiate in a different way instead of clumping inwardly? A cute kind of “extroverted introvert”, or an ambivert 🙂

And then I realized a recipe of 3 ingredients (see chapter 1 below), which if being put individually will be found spread and shallow throughout the web, but are extremely beneficial to combine, and immediately from the beginning I have set it as “100 new little things”. And it’s especially helpful for introverts to try their own way. In addition, because these are just small beginnings, introverts will not feel compelled to “strive hard”, to “change their values,” or to “expose oneself to public” in order to achieve success.

Life can get boring if we live day in day out doing the same things and following the same routine. Why not inject something new into our life? We do not know how well we can do something without taking them into action.

After learning the procedure of daily routines, we usually do not even think about it. Our subconscious mind directs us to automatically go through the same motions over and over. New things force us to get off autopilot and reinvent ourselves. It doesn’t really matter what it is, as long as it is something new and unfamiliar. Stretch ourselves. Stretch our imaginations. Stretch our possibilities.

So, below is the list I create for you to try new little things. One of the longest lists so far in the Internet, which I am proud of 🙂

The secret of doing “new little things”: Overcome fear by summoning your Courage

I remember many years ago the Cartoon Network channel had a cartoon series named Courage The Cowardly Dog. This was a cute series about an excited and frightened pink dog that had been living in a house with two oldsters who every day faced with lots of monsters, aliens and ghosts. Courage ran and hid all the time, but every time when the two oldsters were in danger Courage would close his eyes to run back to rescue, for just all three could run together. Very cute.

Thinking about it, you have fears that you have no reason to eliminate. Like me, I have a fear of cockroaches. But that fear has no harm, so I have almost no motivation to eliminate it. After all, I still have the fear of cockroaches for decades. In fact, we have quite a lot of ways to overcome a fear, once we identify them, including fear of cockroaches.
